FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Illinois softball team used a dominant pitching performance from Jackie Guy to fight past Cal State Fullerton, 5-0, in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. Guy fanned nine Titans' batters while Meredith Hackett and Jessica Davis each tallied two RBIs at the plate.

"Jackie Guy and [catcher] Stephanie Cuevas really stepped up and put together a great game," Illinois head coach Terri Sullivan said. "Jackie threw well all day and produced one of her best outings of the season. She really moved the ball around the zone well and Cuevas kept the batters and runners off balance. Putting together a shutout was something we asked them to do today and they did exactly what we needed."

The Orange and Blue offense opened scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. Danielle Zymkowitz led off the game with an infield single and moved to second on a Danielle Vaji groundout. Hackett followed with a two-run homer, her second of the Judi Garman Classic. In the first inning alone, the Illini sent seven batters to the plate, recording three hits and a walk during the frame.

"Danielle [Zymkowitz] and Meredith [Hackett] put us on the board early and gave us energy," Sullivan said. "We came in knowing we need to play with urgency and we showed it. Their play was contagious and we had good at bats from Kelley [Wedel] and Jessica [Davis] as well. Alex [Booker] gave us a lift in the designated player spot, getting on base and using the field well. This is a good team win and we need to stay focused for tomorrow."

In the third, the Illini plated another runner to push the lead to 3-0. With two outs, Kelley Wedel singled to center field and stole second base. Davis stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI-single to right field to push across the third run.

Illinois continued to produce run support for Guy in the sixth, plating two more Illini. Alex Booker led off with a single to left-center field. Two batters later, Booker reached home following a Vaji single and field error by Cal State Fullerton to put the Orange and Blue up by four. With the bases loaded three batters later, Davis earned the Illini their final run of the game on a single through the middle of the Titans' infield, scoring Vaji from third.

Guy was effective throughout the game, holding the Titans to only three hits and three walks in seven innings of work. The Buena Park, Calif., native held Cal State Fullerton to one or fewer base runners in all but the sixth inning, when Guy worked around a walk and single to earn her second complete game shutout of the season. Behind the plate, Cuevas recorded nine putouts and assisted on two more while catching two Titans' runners attempting to steal second.

Up Next: Illinois (10-10 overall) continues action at the Judi Garman Classic with a 9:30 pm CT game against San Jose State (12-14) on Saturday.
