Clearwater, Fla. - Erin Montgomery smacked her first triple of the season and went 2-for-3, and Katie O'Connell was 2-for-3 as well, but Illinois dropped a 2-1 loss to Baylor in the championship semifinal of the Speedline Invitational.
Illinois finishes third in the strong Speedline Invitational field, behind host South Florida and Baylor.
Baylor put one run across in both the third and fourth innings, both times capitalizing on extra-base hits. Catcher Danelle Arnold doubled to lead off the third, and shortstop Kim Wilmoth rapped an RBI triple in the fourth inning.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Jenna Hall blasted a 3-2 pitch to dead center for her third home run of the season. Erin Montgomery followed with a triple to straightaway center, but the Illini couldn't push her across and trailed 2-1 after four innings.
Illinois threatened again in the fifth, putting runners on first and second after Erin Jones and Katie O'Connell legged out infield singles. But three consecutive groundouts left the Baylor lead at 2-1 after five.
