College Station, Texas - Jenna Hall reached base three times on two singles and an error, and drove in a run as Illinois defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 1-0 in the opening game of the Aggie Invitational.
Sherri Taylor threw a solid game for the Illini, striking out 10 batters and recording her second shutout of the season while allowing only three hits to the Islanders (6-7).
Illinois took advantage of Corpus Christi's miscues in the fifth inning, when Lindsey Hamma reached on a throwing error by the second baseman. She advanced to second on Rachelle Coriddi's infield hit, and scored on Jenna Hall's single to center field to give the Illini a 1-0 lead.
That lead stood as Taylor then struck out four of the Islanders' last six batters to end the game.
Hamma also reached base in all three plate appearances, taking advantage of the error as well as rapping a base hit and walking once.
The Illini face the host Aggies at 4:45 p.m. today.
