Illinois defeats New Mexico to win Maverick Classic

Arlington, Texas - Erin Montgomery hit a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth to help lift Illinois to a 10-2 victory over New Mexico in the Maverick Classic in Arlington, Texas. The second game today was cancelled because there would not have been enough time to finish the contest. The Illini were declared the winners by virtue of going 3-0 in the round robin portion of the tournament.
Illinois broke open a 3-2 game with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to win by the eight-run rule. Jackelyn Diekemper, making her first collegiate start worked five-plus innings to record the victory. Diekemper gave up just three hits and one walk while striking out one. Amanda Fortune picked up the save.
Erin Jones was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored while Montgomery was 2-for-4 with the home run and five RBI.
Montgomery doubled home Jones with the game's first run in the second inning. The Illini scored two more runs in the bottom of third. Lindsey Hamma singled home Rachelle Coriddi with a single. Hamma then stoled second, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch.
UTA countered with two runs in their half of the sixth, but Fortune came into the contest to stem the tide. That set up the big sixth inning for Illinois in which the Illini put the game away.
Illinois is 3-0 for the season. The Illini won their second tournament in school history and first since the beginning of the 2001 season.
