Illinois takes first game of Getterman Classic 4-2
Feb. 4, 2005
(Waco, TX)- Even with a game time temperature of 41 degrees the Fighting Illini had no trouble heating up. The Illini took the first game of the day at the Getterman Classic against the Centenary Ladies 4-2 behind the impressive debut of freshman pitcher Claire DeVreese. DeVreese pitched seven complete innings allowing two runs and five hits with six strikeouts. A five hit performance by the Illini cap off their first game of the season.
The Illini put three runs on the boarding in the bottom of the first. LeeAnn Butcher started the surge with a walk and a stolen base. A Centenary error placed runners on first and second when freshman third baseman Shanna Diller hit a rocket in the 5-6 hole scoring Butcher and advancing to second. Freshman second baseman Angelena Mexicano followed with a scorching line drive double over the left fielders head scoring Hall and Diller.
The Illini added to their run total in the bottom of the second when with bases loaded Diller grounded to the first base side. Molly Lawhead hustled and scored from third on a late fielder's choice throw to home.
The Centenary Ladies couldn't get a runner past second base until the top of the sixth inning when an error and a wild throw cut the Illini lead in half. With a pair of singles the Ladies had runners on first and second when a hard hit grounder bounced sharply off of shortstop Rachelle Coriddi and into centerfield scoring Jennifer Martin on second. With runners on first and third, a double steal attempt went a rye when the Illini showed a good defensive showing by luring Megan Hall off of third and gunning her out at home. After a walk placed runners on first and third for a second time the Illini were looking for a repeat performance but a wild throw scored Wiedeman on third. DeVreese then struck out the next batter which ended the inning with two unearned runs.
The Illini play next at 4:45 p.m. CT tonight against the hosting Baylor Bears.
