Nov. 28, 2012
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Earlier this morning, TopDrawerSoccer.com revealed their women's team of the season, with University of Illinois standout Vanessa DiBernardo being named to the Second Team All-Upperclassmen. DiBernardo was one of 33 upperclassmen recognized for her stellar performance in the 2012 season.
This is DiBernardo's second award of the week and third since the season ended. The junior was announced First Team All-Big Ten during the NCAA Tournament and was just named a U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year Finalist on Monday. In addition, Top Drawer Soccer has DiBernardo ranked 10th in their top-100 upperclassmen in Division-I women's soccer.
Vanessa recorded eight goals and five assists throughout 16 games and 1,425 minutes this season. She netted her second career hat-trick in the 3-2 win over Michigan State, and spearheaded the Illini's first ever win in Ann-Arbor with a five-point performance, both efforts earning her Big Ten offensive player of the week honors.
DiBernardo now has 84 career points which ranks her third all-time in Illinois history behind Emily Brown (108) and Tara Hurless (115). DiBernardo is also second in career game-winning goals with 14, two behind leader Hurless.
The junior led all of the Big Ten in shots per game in conference play with 6.27. Furthermore, DiBernardo broke the Illinois record for most shot attempts taken in a game with 11 in the win over Iowa. Finally, in just three seasons, DiBernardo already owns the top spot in career points in Big Ten play only, with 50.
