ST. LOUIS -
The 15th-ranked and third-seeded Fighting Illini face Saint Louis Sunday at 1 p.m. at SLU's Robert R. Hermann Stadium for a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. Illinois fell to the Billikens earlier in the year at Hermann Stadium, 2-1 in double-overtime. In that match, the Illini put eight of 15 shots on frame but put in just one goal. SLU's Julia Bradenburg scored both goals for the Billikens, including the game-winner in the 103rd minute.
At that point in the season, Illinois was 3-4-0 after the loss. Since then, the Illini have gone 12-3-0, including nine shutouts in their last 13 matches. The Orange and Blue have also picked up the pace on the road, going 4-2-0 away from home after starting the season 0-4-0 on opponents' fields.
After getting much of its scoring from its front line throughout the season, the Illini received a boost from its midfield and defenders in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against SEMO, getting both goals from midfielders Paula Faherty and Jackie Santacaterina and an assist from center back Emily Zurrer.
