CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois women's soccer standout Shayla Mutz earned the Chicagoland Soccer News player of the week for her performance in the 4-1 win over Nebraska on Sunday. Mutz tallied two first half goals, including the eventual game-winner, to push the momentum early to the Illini's favor. The award is Shayla's first of the season.

Mutz, who was honored before the game for Senior Day, got the Illini on the board in the 21st-minute, Mutz stripped a Nebraska defender from the ball and released a hard shot that banked off the right post and in. Then, five minutes later, Nicole Breece inbounded the ball from the left side with a flip-throw in which Shayla redirected the ball into the far post to extend the lead to two.

The strikes were Mutz's second and third goals of the season as she now has 12 career goals and four career winners. The Home Glen native tied her career high in goals in a game as she registered her second career multi-goal performance.

Shayla and the rest of the Illini return to action in Ann Arbor Saturday, Oct. 27, at 5 p.m. CT for a showdown against Michigan. Illinois is 8-7-2 overall and 5-4-1 in Big Ten play. The contest against the Wolverines is the final game of the regular season before the Orange and Blue partake in the Big Ten Tournament starting on Halloween.
