Illinois soccer hosts '2000 in 2000' Friday
Sept. 25, 2000
Much like the Illinois High School Association has its "Pack the Place" night, the University of Illinois Soccer Team is set to do the same Friday in its 7 p.m. match with Northwestern. The all-time attendance record is 878 fans set in last year's season opener against Marquette. That night the Illini defeated the ranked Marquette team, 3-1.
Not only does Illinois hope to set its all-time attendance mark, but has ambitions to draw "2000 in 2000." Tickets are being sold all across campus and promotions on six Champaign area radio stations include ticket giveaways for Friday's match. Free tickets will be given away on area radio stations-- WDWS (AM 1400), WHMS (FM 97.5), WPGU (FM 107.1), WKIO (92.5 FM), WLRW (94.5 FM), WIXY (100.3 FM), Q96, and WGKC (105.9).
The Illini are coming off one of their most impressive matches of the season, a 2-1 victory over previously unbeaten Michigan State Sunday at Illinois Soccer Field. Illinois hosts Michigan on Sunday. With two victories this weekend, the Illini could set a school record for Big Ten victories. Illinois was 3-5-2 a year ago and 3-6 the year before that.
With two wins, the Illini should also again crack the Top 25 rankings, which would mark the latest in the season Illinois has been in the national rankings. Illinois is 4-0 this season at home and has out-shot its opponents 225-79 overall. Emily Brown leads Illinois with 12 points on five goals and two assists.
