CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Junior defender Emily Zurrer earned her second award of the week as she was named to Soccer America's Team of the Week after leading Illinois to a 1-0 upset of the No. 9 Florida Gators last Friday. Zurrer was also named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Zurrer and the Illini defense shut down the Florida attack, allowing the Gators just five shots in the match. Before Florida encountered the Orange and Blue defense, the Gators had scored a combined seven goals through their previous four matches.
The Vancouver, B.C., native was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on two previous occasions. Her first award came after Illinois downed Syracuse and then-No. 13 Auburn with back-to-back shutouts in 2006. She won it for the second time in 2006 after another pair of back-to-back shutouts against then-No. 17 Purdue and then-No. 21 Indiana.
Zurrer and the Illini will travel to Kansas for a 5 p.m. match on Friday before heading to Indiana State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match. Illinois will continue its roadtrip the next weekend, opening Big Ten play at Ohio State on Friday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. and rounding out the weekend on Sunday, Sept. 30 with a 2 p.m. match at Penn State.
