CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois women's soccer team and head coach Janet Rayfield announced the addition of Billy Barmes to the soccer staff on Thursday. Barmes joins the staff as a visiting assistant coach for the 2010 season.
"Billy is one of us," said Rayfield of the former team manager during the 2006-08 seasons. "He has already given much to this program and bringing him back as an assistant coach provides exactly what we need for this team and season. Billy understands the system, the program and the University and can therefore provide an immediate contribution. His experiences and opportunities at the collegiate and the professional levels assure his contributions will make an impact on our 2010 season."
With Illinois, Barmes will be responsible for assisting in all aspects of program operation, including organization and execution of team training and meetings, recruitment of potential student-athletes, travel planning, opponent scouting, video analysis, scheduling, camp directing and marketing and monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes.
A graduate of the University of Illinois, Barmes brings a wealth of soccer experience to the program, having previously worked with the Illini in addition to the University of Southern Mississippi and the Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). He also earned head coaching experience at the scholastic level and collegiate experience as a player, having spent two seasons on the field for Lincoln Christian University.
With the Red Stars, Barmes served as an assistant to the coaching staff and director of team equipment operations. His duties with Chicago included working on video breakdown as well as recording and analyzing training session competition statistics.
Barmes also served similar roles with the Illini during his tenure as team manager. In addition to video breakdown and training session competition statistics duties, the Lincoln, Ill., native also served as the Assistant Camp Director for the Illinois Youth Soccer Camps.
Barmes currently holds a U.S. Soccer National "B" License and Advanced National and Goalkeeping Level II Diplomas from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
"It is an incredible blessing and honor to return to my alma mater, to the program that gave me my start in women's soccer," said Barmes of the opportunity to work with the Illini. "Janet has asked me to help maximize this year's team and I will work tirelessly to do so."
