PARK RIDGE, Ill. - The University of Illinois women's soccer team was picked to finish seventh in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches' Poll, released by the conference on Tuesday. The Illini finished tied for eight in the Big Ten in 2009 with a record of 2-6-2. Seniors Jordan Hilbrands and Danielle Kot and junior Julie Ewing each earned a spot on the 2010 Big Ten Women's Soccer Players to Watch list.
Penn State was picked to finish first in 2010, one season after earning the Big Ten Offensive Player, Defensive Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year awards. In 2009, the Nittany Lions finished atop the Big Ten for the 12th consecutive season with a conference record of 8-1-1 to go with an overall mark of 13-6-2.
Ohio State enters 2010 in second after finishing 2009 at 14-4-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin, Michigan State and Purdue round out the top five. Minnesota is tabbed one spot ahead of the Illini while Michigan comes in eighth place. Indiana is seeded ninth while Northwestern and Iowa earned the 10th and 11th spots, respectively.
Illinois travels to Loyola-Chicago to open its season against the Ramblers at Loyola Soccer Park at 7 p.m. on Aug. 20. The Orange and Blue open the home portion of their schedule at Illinois Soccer Stadium against Wright State on Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.
