July 20, 2010
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois Fighting Illini women's soccer team and head coach Janet Rayfield welcomed Christina Farrell as the final addition to the newcomers for the 2010 season. Farrell, a redshirt-freshman transfer from The University of Oregon, will look to make an immediate impact as a member of the Illini defensive unit that held opponents to 27 goals over the 2009 season.
"She is extremely athletic and a hard nose defender," Rayfield said. "We liked the physical qualities she brought to the game as a senior in high school and will expect her to bring that dimension to our squad as she provides great depth in our defense.
Farrell, a Tucson, Ariz. native, played scholastically at Ironwood Ridge High School before joining The University of Oregon for her freshman season in 2009. At Ironwood Ridge, Farrell was a member of the 2008 and 2009 Region 5AII Conference Championship teams and an All-Southern Arizona First Team selection. Also a member of the track team, Farrell was a regional champion and state finalist in the 100m and 200m events and earned All-Southern Arizona First Team honors.
For their season opener, the Illini travel to Loyola University Chicago on Aug. 20 for a 7:00 PM contest against the Ramblers at Loyola Soccer Park.
