CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Four current Illinois student-athletes and one former Fighting Illini will join a group of nearly 40 other student-athletes and staff on a trip to Rio Verde, Mexico, where they will conduct a sports camp for Fellowship of Christian Athletes June 23-30. Illini soccer player Courtney Bell, women's track and field athletes Angela Bizzarri and Kaitlyn Eisner-Poor, and women's gymnast Lori Hamilton, along with former women's track and field athlete Rachael Gilottoni will make the trip, marking the first time the University of Illinois FCA "huddle" has been represented on the trip.
"This trip is about giving of ourselves, serving those we come in contact with and loving them with no strings attached," UI huddle leader Amy Marino said. "I'm excited for what this week will hold for each person going and I know each of us will come back different. That's what serving does, it changes you."
Rio Verde is a town of about 10,000 people in central Mexico, and FCA also staged a camp there in 2006. The camp is sponsored by Jean Barrett, who had a seven-year career with the San Francisco 49ers from 1973-80.
The event runs Monday, June 25, through Thursday, June 28, with the athletes instructing children during training sessions. There also will be times where they will be able to share their faith with the kids. Sports featured at the camp will be volleyball, soccer, track, football and basketball. The group will take a day to sightsee on Friday before returning home on June 30.
