CHAMPAIGN, Ill.-- Illinois junior defender Heidi Holtzman has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District Five Fall/Winter At-Large Team. The award recognizes both academic and athletic achievement.

Holtzman is one of ten total athletes honored from the sports of cross country, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, rifle, skiing, soccer, and swimming from universities in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ontario and Manitoba.

A business major from Lake Ridge, Va., Holtzman has started all three seasons at defender for Illinois, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament's second round. She had two assists and 20 shots in 2000. Holtzman earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors for the third straight year and played for a defense, which set a school record for fewest goals allowed in school history (1.20).

The Verizon Academic Award is one of many honors bestowed upon Holtzman throughout her Illinois career. She was named Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year and Third Team Freshman All-America by Soccer Buzz in 1998 and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Holtzman now advances to the Verizon Academic All-America ballot. Winners will be announced on April 19.
