Illinois hosts indoor soccer tournament

The University of Illinois begins its 2001 off-season schedule this Saturday at the Irwin Indoor Facility, hosting a 10-team 7v7 tournament on Saturday, Feb. 17. The rules for the 7v7 matches are slightly different than a regular game. The field is shorter (45x60 to be exact), the game is played in two 15-minute halves, there is no punting or dropkicking by the goaltender, and there will be no offside called.
The tournament is divided into two pools of five. The Illini open the tournament against Illinois State at 10 a.m., the Wolfpack Club team at 11:20 am. Elmhurst College at 1:20 p.m., and the Hammer FC at 3:20 p.m. The semifinal matches are at 4:40 p.m. with the championship match slated for 5:20 p.m. The other teams in the pool are The University of Dayton, FC Milwaukee, Busch, SC, GSC Fury, and Eastern Illinois University.
Illinois will compete in three more off-season tournaments during the Spring Semester, one indoors and two outdoors. The Illini will play in the University of Iowa 7v7 Indoor Tournament on Feb. 24, will host an 11v11 outdoor tournament on April 7-8, and participate in an 11v11 outdoor tourney in St. Louis on April 21.
