CHICAGO - Junior Vanessa DiBernardo will head to La Manga, Spain, from Feb. 22-March 5 to play for the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team when it opens its 2013 campaign, as announced by U.S. soccer on Monday. The squad is slated to take on the U-23 sides of Norway, Sweden and England during the two-week trip. U.S. head coach Randy Waldrum will bring a 20-player roster featuring top collegiate players and young pros.
"This is one more step towards Vanessa's ultimate goal of competing for the full national team in the future," head coach Janet Rayfield said. "We are excited for her and her continued development at the national and international level. With her growth during the U-20 World Championship, I expect her to enter this new environment with a level of confidence and understanding of how to deal with the challenges ahead."
DiBernardo is one of eight players on the U-23 WNT roster from the U.S. team that won the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Japan. The dynamic center-midfield trio from that team will again play together with DiBernardo, teaming up with Morgan Brian (Virginia) and Sara Killion (UCLA). The Naperville, Ill., native started all six contests in the World Cup Championship and scored a goal in the quarterfinal victory against Korea DPR.
The U.S. U-23s will play Norway on Feb. 28, Sweden on March 2 and finish up the four-team tournament against England on March 4.
