UI Falls to Top Seeded PSU
Illinois' first Big Ten Tournament appearance ends in 1-0 defeat - 11/6/98

The University of Illinois soccer team dropped its opening round game at the Big Ten Soccer Tournament, 1-0, to top-seeded Penn State at State College. The loss elimiates Illinois from the tournament, and the team finishes its second year as a varsity program with a 12-8 record, a drastic improvement on 1997's 7-10 mark. Pen

n State got its only goal in the first half at the 41:25 mark from Carole Dutchka. Illinois goalkeeper Amy Bessette had one of her best games of the season, saving six balls and keeping Illinois in the game as the offense attempted to connect.

Illinois dominated play in the second half, outshooting the Lions 7-4, but couldn't get a shot past Penn State's keeper, Emily Oleksiuk, who yesterday was named the first-team All-Big Ten goalkeeper and the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Freshmen Emily Brown and Lindsay Johnson each had good scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net.
