Minnesota Defeats Illini, 3-1
The University of Illinois soccer team was defeated by the University of Minnesota, 3-1, this afternoon at the University of Minnesota campus in the Twin Cities. Illinois drops to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in conference with one conference game and three non-conference games remaining in the regular season.
Minnesota pulled to a quick 2-0 lead in the first half and Illinois was unable to make a comeback. Big Ten Freshman of the Year candidate Lisa Baldwin netted the only goal for Illinois in the second half. Baldwin now has eleven goals on the season and five in Big Ten play.
Penn State has clinched the Big Ten title, followed by Wisconsin in second and Northwestern in third. The rest of the conference standings are not yet set, although Illinois has clinched a berth in the Big Ten Tournament for the first time in the program's history. The tournament is scheduled for Nov. 6-8 at Penn State University. The conference takes eight of ten teams to the tournament, and depending on the result of Friday evening's game between Illinois and Indiana, the Illini will either be the seventh or eighth seed. Iowa, also a second-year varsity program, and Michigan State did not qualify for postseason play.
Illinois closes out its Big Ten schedule Friday evening against Indiana at 7 p.m. at the UI Soccer Multiplex located at First and Stadium Drive.
