Illinois Clinches Postseason Berth
The University of Illinois soccer team defeated the University of Iowa, 5-0, this evening at the UI Soccer Fields at First and Stadium Drive. The Homecoming win clinches the Illini a spot in the Big Ten Soccer Tournament scheduled for Nov. 6-8 at Penn State University.
Freshman Emily Brown opened the scoring early when her first goal of the night found the back of the net in the 22nd minute of play. Lindsay Johnson made it 2-0 at the half when she connected on a pass from Kim Doetzel at the 42:05 mark.
Illinois opened up the scoring in the second when Kelly Buszkiewicz scored at 58:17, followed by Emily Brown again at 72:28 and her twin Molly Brown at 74:53.
Iowa goalkeeper Gabve Mauren notched nine saves, all in the second half, in attempting to shutdown the Illini offense.
Illini goalkeepers Amy Bessette and Sarah Heggen picked up the fifth shutout of the season for the Illini defense. The defense held Iowa to only two shots in the game while Illinois took 15. The Illini also had the advantage in corner kicks, notching eight while Iowa has four.
Illinois is now 9-5 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten. The Illini are back in action Sunday afternoon when the squad travels to Minnesota for a Big Ten showdown with the Golden Gophers scheduled for 1 p.m.
