- 9/29/98

The University of Illinois soccer team defeated Purdue University, 4-2, this evening before 498 fans at the UI Soccer Fields located at First and Stadium Drive. Illinois improved its overall record to 7-2 while tuning up for weekend showdowns with Northwestern and Wisconsin.

Senior Sarah Aberle opened scoring for Illinois just 0:58 into the game to give Illinois a quick 1-0 lead that lasted until the 61:06 mark in the game when Purdue's Christina Creamer connected on a shot to tie the game at one apiece.

Illinois came fighting back quickly thereafter, adding goals from Lindsay Johnson (63:43), Missy Keeler (71:57) and Lisa Baldwin (80:32) in quick succession before Ann Streepey of Purdue closed scoring at the 87:03 mark.

Tonight's game between the Illini and the Boilermakers will not count in the Big Ten standings. Purdue is in its first season of women's varsity soccer and will not officially join the Big Ten until the 1999 season.

Illinois next travels to Northwestern Friday for a 4 p.m. showdown with the Wildcats and then continues on to Wisconsin for a 1 p.m. game with the Badgers on Sunday.
