Illini Shut Out Valpo, 3-0
The University of Illinois soccer team defeated Valparaiso University, 3-0, this afternoon at the UI Soccer Fields located at First and Stadium Drive. Illinois improved its overall record to 6-2 while breaking a two-game losing streak that dates back to a 3-2 loss one week ago to Penn State.
Illinois opened scoring just 5:29 into the game on a Lindsay Johnson goal that was served up by fellow freshman Lisa Baldwin. The Illini connected once more in the first half when Sarah Aberle found the back of the net following a pass from Emily Brown.
The Illini, who held Valparaiso shotless in the game, continued to pressure in the second half and added its final goal at the 70:42 mark when Julie Schueller rebounded an indirect free kick into the net.
Amy Bessette notched 76 plus minutes in goal for Illinois to earn her third shutout of the season.
Illinois is next in action this Tuesday night when the team hosts Purdue University at 7 p.m. at the UI Soccer Multiplex. Purdue is a first-year soccer program, and will not be an official member of the Big Ten conference until the 1999 season.
