Penn State Outlasts Illinois 3-2
The University of Illinois soccer team lost a heartbreaker 3-2 to the No. 8 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions this afternoon at the UI Soccer Field. Both teams entered the game with 5-0 undefeated records and 1-0 records in Big Ten play. The goals for the Illini were scored by Kelly Buszkiewicz and Emily Brown. Illinois was leading the game 2-1 until the 78th minute.
Buszkiewicz opened the scoring in the second minute of the game to give the Orange and Blue a quick 1-0 lead. Courtney Lawson of Penn State scored on a penalty kick in the 13th minute to tie the game. Following a 45-minute rain delay, Brown redirected a pass from Buszkiewicz to temporarily put the Illini on top in the 61st minute. However, Shari Pickett capped off a flurry of Nittany Lion shots on goal with a goal in the 78th minute and Lawson netted her second goal of the game in the 88th minute to win the game for Penn State.
The loss drops Illinois to 5-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Buszkiewicz's goal was her second of the season and the goal by Brown was her sixth which places her second on the team behind Lisa Baldwin's seven. She is tied with Baldwin for total points with fourteen.
