Illini Rout Quincy in Home Opener
University of Illinois Head Coach Jillian Ellis celebrated her 32nd birthday as the Illini defeated Quincy, 5-0, in the team's home opener this afternoon at the Soccer Multiplex in Champaign. Illinois scored all five of its goals in the second half.
Junior Kelly Buszkiewicz (Mequon, Wis./Mequon) scored the team's first goal (46:15) on an assist from Emily Brown (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier). Brown scored the second goal (61:20) on an assist from Kris Twyning (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) while sophomore Stephanne Steinhoff (St. Charles, Mo./West) recorded the third goal (62:45) unassisted. Freshman Lisa Baldwin (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) scored for the second time this season from 10 feet out while Kim Doetzel (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) (85:30) capped off the Illini's scoring with the first goal of her UI career.
"It's a great start to our season at home," said Ellis. "We're 2-0 and at this point we're looking to build our confidence and wins help us do that. It's a bonus to have different players scoring goals."
Illinois improves to 2-0 on the season while Quincy falls to 0-2. The Illini have now outscored its opponents 6-0, dating back to Friday's win over Illinois State.
The team departs Thursday for Kentucky, where they will compete in the Louisville Cardinal Classic. Illinois takes on Western Michigan Friday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. and Louisville Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. Head Coach Jillian Ellis will be available for interviews tomorrow at the Varsity Room beginning at noon.
