MAPLE CITY, Mich. - The Illinois women's soccer team continued its preseason training camp with an exhibition game on Friday against No. 8 Virginia at Myles Kimberly Park, where they fell 3-0. The Orange and Blue will begin the 2013 season on the road at No. 10 Notre Dame on Aug. 23 at 4:30 p.m. and at Louisville on Aug. 25 at noon. Illinois will host its home opener at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium against College of Charleston on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
"This game served the purpose we intended," head coach Janet Rayfield said. "It stretched us, exposed our areas of needed improvement, and gave us direction and desire. Our youth got better today and will improve even more as we break this down over the next few days. This team knows improvement is the key now - not just tactically but our fitness level, grit and confident commitment to each other on the field. We have a starting point and a finish line - now the journey begins."
The game was played in three 30-minute periods. Midway through the first period the Illini fell behind 1-0 when UV's Danielle Colaprico scored off an assist from Makenzy Doniak. The second period was scoreless as Virginia held its 1-0 advantage heading into the final 30 minutes.
The Cavaliers added two goals during the final period on tallies by Mary Morgan and Colaprico to make the final margin 3-0.
