Champaign, Ill. - The University of Illinois women's soccer team opened its 2010 schedule with a convincing exhibition victory over Indiana State, 4-1, at Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium on Monday. Four different Illini recorded a goal as the Orange and Blue offense took control from the opening minutes of the match.
"Overall, I am pleased with where we are with the pieces we have put into place," said head coach Janet Rayfield as the Illini prepare to open the 2010 regular season. "We haven't even begun to put all the pieces in place; however, with what we have in place, we saw people on the same page and that's really what we are looking for."
Freshman midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) put the Illini ahead, 1-0, in the 6th minute. DiBernardo dribbled to the top of the box and lofted a shot over Sycamores' keeper Emily Lahay, off the crossbar and into the net.
Seven minutes later, sophomore forward Shayla Mutz (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) doubled the Illini lead. Mutz collected a loose ball off an Illini shot and tapped it past Lahay for her first tally of the season.
Freshman forward Megan Pawloski (Belleville, Ill./Althoff Catholic) joined DiBernardo and Mutz in the scoring column during the 16th minute as Pawloski drove a rebound past Lahay and into the left side-netting to put the Illini ahead, 3-0.
"Vanessa strikes her ball really well and Megan is a fighter in the box," said Rayfield of her first-year players recording goals. "You saw both of those things and saw what those two bring to the table and that is going to be important for them to continue to bring those things to the table."
The final Illinois goal was notched in the opening minutes of the second of three 30-minute periods. Sophomore forward Marissa Holden (Murphy, Texas/Plano East) sent a cross from outside the box to senior forward Jordan Hilbrands (Bexley, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls). Hilbrands sprinted into the box as Holden crossed the ball and re-directed it on net with one touch to put the Illini in front, 4-0.
The Orange and Blue return to Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium for their next match as they host Missouri in exhibition play on Friday, Aug. 13 at 1:00 p.m. The Illini open the regular season at Loyola-Chicago on Friday, Aug. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
