Assistant Coach

Christian Michner joined the program in 2008 after spending one season as the associate head coach and three as an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma.

Michner has a plethora of soccer experience both as a coach and a player. The Germantown, Tenn., native played five years in the professional ranks in the United States and four years at the Division I level, splitting time between Creighton University and the College of Charleston. He also spent two years with the U.S. U-20 National Team.

His coaching experience ranges from the Cal South Olympic Development Program and multiple youth soccer leagues to the university level. A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Michner attained his U.S. Soccer Federation "A" Coaching License in 2006.

A 1998 graduate of the College of Charleston, Michner earned his bachelor degree in psychology. He and his wife, Sarah, had their first son, Caelen, in April of 2008.

"His depth of experience as a player, his passion for the sport, his contacts around the country and his knowledge as a coach will immediately impact all the facets of our program from the current players, to our recruiting, to the dynamics of the coaching staff," Illinois head coach Janet Rayfield said of Michner. "He brings a new perspective and will blend, balance, and complete a staff that is focused on and excited about the future of this program."
