Illini Ink: Women's Gymnastics Online Journal Week 13
Dec. 9, 2009
Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's 13th edition, sophomore Hannah Welker recaps the Mixed Pairs exhibition, previews the upcoming finals week and wished everyone a happy holiday season.
Hey Illini Fans,
I hope you are all looking forward to the holiday season! With winter break just around the corner, the team has been practicing hard and gearing up for the start of the 2010 season!
Each year, to get into the competition mindset, before we head home for the holidays, we have our Mixed Pairs Exhibition with the men's team. This past weekend, we were able to perform in front of our loyal fans at our very own Huff Hall. The event was a success for all. The freshmen got a chance to test out the equipment for the first time. But best of all, they got to experience what it is like to compete as an Illini! Since it was a "mixed pairs" competition, each girl was paired up with a guy from the men's team. We even got each other gifts, which made it really fun! Our student-athlete guest judges scored fairly, and the first place team was Austin Philips and Melissa Fernandez. Mel earned two perfect 10s on her events, bars and beam, which helped lead her team to victory. Overall, the meet was a positive experience for everyone.
While the weekend was filled with fun and competition, this week is the time in the semester when we all have to hit the books hard, as finals begin Friday. All of the girls have been studying hard to finish out the semester strong. We have also been practicing hard in this last week of the semester, in order to polish our routines to prepare for January.
So as we head home next weekend to spend some time with our families, we wish you all a happy holiday season and safe travels, as well. We hope you are as excited for season to begin as we are. We kick off the season on January 8, at Oregon State and our first home meet will be on January 23 at Huff Hall against Oklahoma. So get ready, because this season is going to be a fantastic one!
Keep reading and Go Illini!
