Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this week's edition, junior Nicole Cowart talks about the intra-squad meet, Thanksgiving Break fun, and this weekend's Mixed Pairs Exhibition.
We had our first intra-squad meet two Sundays ago, and we all did very well. We went to floor first where we hit eight for eight routines. The team was excited to see all the new routines which Amy choreographed. With everyone showing them off for the intra-squad, they looked great! We then went to vault where the vault team did a phenomenal job. We are still critiquing our landings so that we can get stuck landings by the time season rolls around! Bars and beam went exceptionally well with several hit routines on each event. Our team is really starting to come together and this intra-squad was a great preview to our upcoming season.
On the Saturday before our intra-squad meet, the freshman and sophomore girls moved out of the dorms and stayed with the upperclassmen until everyone returned home on Tuesday. I loved having a couple days of slumber parties with the freshmen. We watched multiple Christmas videos together and also went bowling. Laura and I were on a team together and bowled a 117, the highest of all the girls. Personally, I think we could become professional bowlers together but it's not quite as enticing as gymnastics ;).
This upcoming weekend we are hosting our annual Mixed Pairs Exhibition Event. Each girl on the team is paired with one of the male gymnasts. Together, they compete four events for "celebrity" judges, which consist of other student-athletes from the University. This exhibition is a chance for all of us to get some pre-meet butterflies out and for our fans to get a sneak peek at what our season will entail. Come support the men's and women's gymnastics team this Sunday, December 7th at Huff Hall, 4:00 pm! Thanks for reading!
