Nov. 18, 2009
Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's 11th edition, senior Sarah Schmidt provides the latest practice updates, the team's Thanksgiving break plans and a recap of Dad's weekend.
Hey there Illini Fans!!
I can not believe that Thanksgiving break is right around the corner!! Time is flying by this year, even compared to the years past. Less than one week until intra-squad is here and the freshmen will get a little peak of what the season is all about. Practices have been picking up and everyone is working extra hard in the gym to be routine ready for Sunday. Within the last week, we have had team beam and team floor during practices to help us see where we are and get out the kinks before the intra-squad. We are further along with routines compared to last year, and the girls are looking amazing! It is going to be exciting. Saturday night the team will be heading over to Mazza's (Kim's) house for a nice home cooked Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberries, and rolls. Personally, I am looking forward to the mashed potatoes and gravy....Mmmmm!
The dorms close on Saturday and the underclassmen get to move in with us for a few days!! This break Kelsey, Hannah, and Alina are moving in with Laura, Suki, and I! Elise, Jac, Abbie, and Macy are all staying with the juniors. It's the first time that the freshmen get to experience apartment life. It is always a good time being with everyone for the 3 days. We all get to go home on Tuesday afternoon and spend some time with our families for the holiday. I am personally excited about the car ride home with all the girls flying out of O'Hare. We will enjoy a cramped ride in my new car while listening to Christmas music!!
This past weekend was Dad's weekend and the weather was fantastic. Thank goodness it was beautiful for the game because it poured Sunday, Monday and Tuesday! There were 30 or more parents that came down for this event. The freshman parents got to meet the returning parents for the first time since we have been here. It was a lot of fun seeing the parents back together for another season. The Smith's, Botterman's, and the Kruk's also made an appearance this weekend. The parents worked so hard putting this tailgate together for everyone; there was lots of planning involved. The Botterman's and the Cowart's even brought their RV's for the event, all-in-all the tailgate was a huge success.
That's about it for now. Thanks for reading!! GO ILLINI!
