Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this week's edition, freshman Sam Perino talks about the big football win over #1 Ohio State, how the team is looking in practice and the upcoming Thanksgiving break.

I-L-L! I-N-I!

This past Saturday most of the girls went over to Kim Kruk's apartment for a potluck to watch the big football game against Ohio State. It was definitely one of the more exciting games to watch considering we beat the number one team in the country! Our football team played an amazing game. Right after the game we were so excited we ran through Green Street where there were tons of Illini fans rushing out of their apartments screaming and honking cars. There was also a crowd of about 300 or more at the Alma Mater singing and chanting. The street got so crowded that they had to shut down traffic for awhile. It was really exciting as a freshman to be a part of this!

Things have been moving at a fast pace around the gym, as practice is definitely starting to pick up. We had a mini two-event intra-squad on Sunday where we competed vault and beam. We started off a little shaky, but as it went on, we started to pump each other up, and everyone started to hit. I was amazed to watch some of the girls on beam because they were hitting their triple series' perfectly. There were also some pretty powerful vaults (i.e. several GREAT yurechenko fulls and halves!). Since there is only about a week left of practice before break everyone is really starting to push themselves a lot more. The team is definitely progressing more, both with polishing up our routines and with our endurance. The increased energy in the gym from everyone pumping each other up REALLY helps tremendously (as Suki says).

I can't believe there are only a few days of practice until Thanksgiving Break! I know all the girls are excited to spend some time at home for a few days, and eat a good home-cooked meal! Thanksgiving Break is also a reminder of how close season is. Before we leave for break, we will be doing a team intra-squad. Then, on December 7th is our Mixed Pairs meet. Everything seems to be coming up so quick!

This Saturday, the team was invited to have a big Thanksgiving dinner at Coach Bob's house. It should be a lot of fun. I love having the whole team together; as we always have a great time! There is also a home football game against Northwestern. It is the last home game for the regular season so all of the girls are pretty pumped and ready to support Illini football!

Well, I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and thanks for reading!

Sam
