Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's ninth edition, sophomore Elise Gill talks about teaching a Girl Scout troop, the team's floor routines and the squad's interactive bulletin board.
Hey Illini fans!
This week has been so much fun! Last week we all went out to dinner at El Toro to celebrate Mel's birthday. We ate way too many chips and salsa, but we had a great time. Last night a Girl Scout troop came in to watch the end of practice, it was fun to hear them cheering for us as we finished up our workout. After our practice was complete, some of the girls went over to the Irwin Academic Center with them to talk about the benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle. The Brownies were all in second grade and very cute. They were very impressed by all the gymnastics and looked like they had a great time watching.
In the gym everyone has been putting the final touches on their floor routines with Amy. They look so great! I can't wait to see them all, especially the freshmen. I think they all had a lot of fun learning them. Hannah's routine has to be my favorite, if she ever calms down enough to do it to the music.
We have an interactive bulletin board that we made earlier this year. The seniors put up something on the board; no one knows what it is, and then the rest of the team made puzzle pieces which the seniors used to cover up their surprise. Every time we reach a team goal for the day, we get to take a puzzle piece down. Well, we just took another puzzle piece off the wall! It's always a very exciting moment as we all try and figure out what's underneath. However, the picture in the background is really starting to come through.
We're in the process of picking the last of the songs to put on our pump-up playlist for Huff Hall. Everyone has put on their favorites; it's really getting us excited for meet season, Mixed Pairs is only a month away! I can't wait to find out who everyone will be teamed up with on the men's team or what event we will all be doing.
Thanks for reading and GO ILLINI!
