Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this week's edition, senior Julie Crall talks about the start of practice, a weekend with recruits, and this week's events.
Hey there Illini Fans!
Pre-season is officially under way as last Thursday served as the Illini gymnasts' first pre-season practice! All fourteen of us have been anticipating the start of real practices since school began last month, so it is truly exciting to be at the launch of our journey to a victorious 2009 season. This past week, we came up with our team slogan for the year, "ILL-INI DOMINATE", which we love yelling at the beginning of each practice as it creates the perfect echo in the gym. The team is already meshing very well together, adjusting to workouts, and getting stronger day by day.
This past weekend was an eventful recruiting weekend. Friday after practice, the team and our recruits decorated the volleyball team's locker room before their Friday night game. Friday night, we went to both the volleyball and soccer games to cheer on our fellow Illini teams. After that, it was off to play miniature golf! Let's just say the course was harder than we expected as much of our time was spent chasing after our balls into the water. Still, the night was filled with many laughs and we had a terrific time.
Saturday evening, the team all came together for a "traveling dinner party." We started at Lindsey's and my apartment for appetizers, headed over to Kim's new house for some games and dinner, and ended the night at Marijka's new house for dessert and chit-chat with the recruits. It was a fun-filled weekend as we always get so excited at the possibilities of welcoming new additions to our family.
There are a few things that the team is looking forward to in the days ahead. Saturday, the team is working at a "bags tournament," a community service event within our Hometown Heroes program. We also are in anticipation for the Illinois vs. Penn State Saturday night; hopefully the team brings home a victory! Finally, our "picture day" is on Tuesday, and we will see where on campus our pictures will be taken this year.
Stay tuned for more Illini updates next week! Thanks for reading!
