Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's third edition, junior Melissa Fernandez talks about the start of official practice, the team's kickboxing workout and the new team motto.
Hey Illini Fans!
We've been on campus now for a couple weeks and everyone has adjusted well to new classes and schedules. Like Suki said before, we started official practices this past Sunday and all of us were really excited for it! It's great to 'pass around the sheet' and have assignments on each event. Since we first stepped into Kenney Gym this semester, every one of us has been working really hard on cleaning up skills or learning new ones. The work ethic and excitement in the gym has been awesome! Just recently, Hannah performed her new bar dismount downstairs for the first time! It was beautiful! With the official workouts starting, we're looking better than ever, including the freshmen. They have adjusted really well to college and they are a GREAT addition to our team!
This Tuesday we had kickboxing instead of our usual spinning class for morning workout. Our junior class thought it would be fun to show up like real kick boxers! We came in with robes and our hands taped up like we were ready to fight! It was a good laugh for everyone. Look for pictures on our website of our kickboxing class.
Every year we come up with a team motto for the season. Last year it was "DOMINATE" and the year before it was "UNITE". We've come up with a couple ideas for this year, but found one we really like. It hasn't become official yet, but you could say we're coming back for more this season....
This weekend is the big football game against Ohio State. We plan on getting together at the senior's apartment and cheering on our Fighting Illini to a victory!
Thanks for reading and GO ILLINI!
