Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's first edition, junior Hannah Welker talks about the start of practice, this year's team word and the new freshmen.
Hey Illini Fans!
Welcome back for another great year of Fighting Illini Gymnastics!! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer filled with fun and hot weather. The team had an amazing summer as well, but now that September is here, so is preseason practice!! We have been preparing for official practice since school started in August, and tomorrow it all begins. It is the beginning of a new year. A new team. A new chance to make memories and school history!
Every year, our team comes up with a word to be our motto for the season. This year our word is IGNITE! Every day before warm up begins, we scream our word and it echoes throughout the gym. It gives me goose bumps every time! This season, we want to have a fire under us to push ourselves to our ultimate goals.
While we had four seniors graduate last year that are truly missed and will definitely be hard to replace, we gained three dynamite freshmen, Liz McNabb, Amber See, and Sarah Fiedler. The girls have made a smooth transition to college so far, and have been a great addition in and out of the gym. It is always fun to see the new freshies do their skills and become part of our gym atmosphere. I am still amazed every time Amber vaults. She's so powerful!
So as the team gears up for a first official practice, we have one thing in mind, the team! This year we are already so united as a team. The attitudes in the gym are so great right now, our team chemistry will only get better from here!
This weekend our football team plays Northern Illinois on Saturday, so we will all be there cheering them on in our orange and blue!
Keep reading each week for more updates as we get into preseason practices and gear up for an amazing 2011 season!
