Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's first edition, junior Allison Buckley talks about the Fall Fun Fest, the team's "Big Sister, Little Sister" idea and their potluck for the football game.
Hello Illini Fans!!!
I can't tell you how excited we all are to be back on campus and gearing up for another season of Fighting Illini Gymnastics. It was extremely exciting to welcome our freshmen to campus and to see all of the girls again. I know that everyone enjoyed their summer, but we are all ready to get back into the swing of things with school and practice. We are now into our third week of school and so many fun things have already happened.
We started off the year at the Student-Athlete Fall Fun Fest. This event takes place the day before classes begin. All of the student-athletes, coaches, and athletic administration get together for some fun and food to welcome everyone back for another thrilling year of Illinois Athletics. There were some races, a pie-eating contest, and even a dunk tank (Coach Bob got a little wet!). It was nice for all of us to get to spend time with each other and for the freshmen to meet other athletes that they will be cheering on throughout the year.
The freshmen seem to be doing a great job adjusting to college life and staying on top of their studies. We have a large group of freshmen this year so it has been really important for us to get to know all of them well and make them feel comfortable and at home. Since the freshman class is so big this year, we are having "Big Sister, Little Sister." Each upperclassman is paired with an underclassman. This is somebody that each of us can go to just to talk or for any guidance. Our first night here we all made picture frames with our "sister" to put up in our rooms. It was a lot of fun and everybody's turned out great!
This past weekend was the first Illini Football game of the year. We decided to have a potluck at the senior's apartment. Everyone brought a dish or some drinks to share while we cheered on the Illini. Even though the outcome wasn't what we wanted we all had a good time together and we're ready for the next game against Illinois State University this Saturday.
Thanks for reading and GO ILLINI!!!
