CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) announced the 2011 Scholastic All-America award winners and five Illini gymnasts were honored for their outstanding academic performances this year. Seniors Allison Buckley, Melissa Fernandez and Samantha Perino and sophomores Elise Gill and Jaclyn Kantecki earned the laurel as a result of GPAs of 3.5 or better for the year.
Fernandez, a kinesiology major, boasted a 3.73 GPA and was recognized for the fourth time in her career. Buckley, another kinesiology major with a 3.67 GPA, and Perino, a psychology major with a 3.91 GPA, collected the accolade for the third-straight year.
Gill, who was enrolled in general studies, notched a 3.56 GPA to pick up the award for a second time while Kantecki, a psychology major, was a first-time recipient with a 3.58 GPA. A total of 501 student-athletes earned Scholastic All-America status, combining for a 3.78 overall GPA.
Southeast Missouri State won the National Academic Team Championship with a 3.9118 composite team GPA, while the Illini were ranked 23rd on the list with a team GPA of 3.4308. Illinois ranked third best in the Big Ten behind only Michigan State (eighth) and Ohio State (11th).
