University of Illinois women's gymnastics head coach Bob Starkell announced today the hiring of Jenny Alf as the new assistant coach for the women's gymnastics program at Illinois. Alf comes to Champaign from the University of Minnesota, a program where she once competed and volunteer coached at.

As the new assistant coach, Alf will primarily deal with the floor exercise, music selection compilation, and choreography. She will also play a key role in on-campus recruiting and alumni relations.

"Jenny will jump right in and be a great addition to the university and gymnastics program," said Starkell. "She's a great person with a lot of integrity. Jenny has had good experience in the conference and at the championship level. Her energy and work ethic will be a great asset. We are very fortunate to have her on our staff."

Alf comes from the University of Minnesota, where she competed as a gymnast and assisted in coaching.

"I'm really excited to be part of this team," said Alf. "I've heard really great things about the coaching staff and the team is starting to become a force in the Big Ten. From what I've seen so far, I think we have a chance of doing very well and going very far next season."

Alf served as a student assistant coach for the University of Minnesota for the 2004 season and as a volunteer coach in 2005. Last season, she helped coach the Golden Gophers to a third-place showing at the Big Ten Championships, the program's highest conference team finish since 2002.

As a gymnast, Alf competed as a Golden Gopher from 2000-2003. In 2003, she finished fifth in the vault at the NCAA Regional Championships with a career-best score of 9.850. A four-year letterwinner, Alf finished her career ranked third on Minnesota's all-time top performers list on the balance beam (9.925), tied for seventh in the floor exercise (9.925), and tied for ninth on the vault (9.850). Alf earned her bachelor's degree in kinesiology from the University of Minnesota in 2004.
