CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois finished the 2010-11 season in 23rd place in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, marking the program's second-best finish in the 18-year history of the award. Illinois' best finish in the Directors' Cup came in 2008-09, when the Illini were 20th in the final rankings.

Illinois received 273.0 points during the spring sports season to improve its yearly total to 731.5 points. The Illini men's golf team provided the biggest boost in the spring, earning 72.75 points with a fifth place finish at the NCAA Championships. The Orange and Blue also received considerable production from men's tennis (ninth place, 64 points), men's track & field (12th place, 62.25 points) and baseball (17th place, 50 points). Women's golf contributed 19 points and women's track & field rounded out the spring scoring with five points.

The Fighting Illini ranked fourth among Big Ten schools in this year's standings, behind only Ohio State (second), Penn State (13th) and Michigan (15th). Nationally, Stanford (1,550.25) took home its 17th straight Director's Cup title, out pacing second-place Ohio State (1,277.05) by 273.2 points.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup honors institutions that maintain a broad-based athletics program, achieving success across men's and women's sports programs. Each institution is awarded points based on the national finish of each program, while the school with the highest annual points total earns a crystal trophy in recognition of its success.

The Directors' Cup was developed in 1993-94 as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's.
