Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this summer edition, junior Melissa Fernandez gives an update on what the team has been up to, how the Illini Gymnastics Camp went and about filming a Faces of the Big Ten commercial.
Hey Illini Fans!
I hope everyone has had a great summer so far! Let me be the first to say--it's great to be back on campus! With the majority of returning team members taking summer courses, there's never been a dull moment around here. After finals in the spring we had about a month break to spend time with family and friends, travel, and vacation. We returned to Champaign about three weeks ago to begin summer classes and for ample bonding time with the girls. It's been especially great for the freshmen because it's the first time they're experiencing apartment life on their own! Elise is quite the chef and loves being able to cook anytime she wants. One night, she made us the most amazing pecan puffs, covered in an extreme amount of powered sugar. Mm!
Last week we held our annual girls summer camp that lasted from Saturday to Wednesday. Camp is one of our favorite things about Champaign summers as we get to coach and counsel some amazing young gymnasts. Lip Sync night is always an entertaining evening and this years' competition included many Justin Bieber songs, Kelsey's favorite singer. At the end of the camp the girls showed off their dance routines they had practiced during the course of the camp and it really showed just how much fun they had.
Also last week, I was asked to film a commercial for the Big Ten Network. It was my first time shooting a commercial so I was a little nervous and anxious about what to expect. But as soon aswe started filming, I quickly got the hang of it and really enjoyed the entire process! We took still shots, audio clips, upside shots, and a few action shots at Kenney Gym. What an honor and a simply amazing experience to shoot for the Big Ten! The commercial will be airing this fall, so be on the look out for it!
Things will be back to normal this week since camp is finished, and we'll be able to spend more time training. Summer is a time for us to rest up any nagging injuries and really get ourselves in top shape for the upcoming season. It's also a time for learning new skills!! Along with our training we've added the workout program called Insanity. Alumni Lindsey Smith began the 60-day challenge and had positive things to say about it, so we decided to give it a try. We're going into week 3 now and can already see results! We're really learning how to "Dig Deep!" with every push-up and power jack we do.Even coach Amy Kruse has joined in with us!!
Well that's all for now. We'll keep you updated on more exciting events going on with the Illini Gymnastics team as the summer goes on. Thanks for reading!
P.s. We're so excited about hosting Regionals at Assembly Hall. What a great honor! Go Illini!!!
