June 22, 2014
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illinois Associate Head Coach Jay Santos has officially been named the head women's gymnastics coach for Eastern Michigan University. The Eagles' Vice President and Director of Athletics Heather Lyke announced the hiring this past Tuesday. Santos spent the last four seasons with the Illini, and come Monday, he will become the third head coach in Eastern Michigan history.
"Jay will definitely be missed by our Illini family, but this is an exciting opportunity for him," said Illinois head coach Kim Landrus. "I am happy that he is realizing his career goal of becoming a head coach at a Division I program and wish him the best in his new endeavor."
Santos served as the head bars coach for the Orange and Blue along with playing an integral role in on-and-off campus recruiting. This past season, he helped guide the Illini to back-to-back bids to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. In addition, the squad ranked 13th in the country on bars in 2014 and recorded the third highest (49.4) bars score in school history.
