Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's 24th edition, senior Allison Buckley talks about cheering on the men's team at their Senior Meet and the upcoming NCAA regional in Tuscaloosa.
Hey Illini Fans-
I cannot believe that April is just around the corner and season is coming to a close. This past week was Spring Break and most of us had a nice break from school work and were able to get some rest not having a competition during the weekend. Because we did not have to compete this weekend we were all able to head to the boys Senior Meet at Huff Hall. It was really great cheering the men's team on and getting to watch them compete, especially seniors Chad Wiest and Dan Ribeiro. Both of them took home event titles so it was a great way for them to finish off their senior year. The boys had an awesome meet and many of the boys posted season high scores. It was a great way to get prepared to host the Big Ten Championships this coming weekend.
Despite not having a competition our team had a two day intra-squad in order to gear up for Regionals this weekend. On Sunday we competed bars and floor. We got off to a great start on bars and carried that momentum through floor. Then on Monday we came back with the same intensity for vault and beam. We competed on beam last to make sure we ended on the same event we will finish on this weekend! We also played a CD with crowd noise on it to work on staying focused no matter what is going on away from our event.
With only one practice left before we travel everyone is getting really excited to head to Alabama. Almost all of our families will be there to cheer us on in hopes of making it to our 2nd NCAA National Championship appearance ever. It will be great to have some of our own crowd there especially because the seniors are the only class that has competed at Alabama before. We hope that you all will be following us closely on Saturday night and cheering us on as we compete! Also, don't forget to head out to Huff Hall on Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. to cheer on the Illini Men's Gymnastics team as they look to win their third consecutive Big Ten Championship Title! It should be a very exciting weekend for Illinois Gymnastics.
Thanks for reading and GO ILLINI : )
