Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's 21st edition, sophomore Elise Gill recaps the squad's meet in East Lansing and looks ahead to the upcoming weekend.
Hello Illini Fans!
I cannot believe how fast this season has flown by. We're already only three weeks away from Big Ten's in Minnesota, I can't wait! This past weekend we traveled to East Lansing to compete against Michigan State. Our teams have a fun rivalry and last year we began the tradition of the victory plank which we have now won for two years in a row. Macy started us off on bars with her career high of a 9.85, this was especially exciting to see after her long journey recovering from her elbow injury. The best part of the meet was watching our beam team seal our teams victory, it was amazing. Kelsey, Al and Mel all got consecutive 9.9's, which helped us receive a beam total of 49.325, breaking our old record of 49.2 from 2009.
Next weekend looks to be a particularly thrilling time. We travel to Oklahoma to compete in a quad meet on Friday and then fly back to Champaign for our annual senior meet on Sunday. This upcoming weekend will give us a great opportunity to put up some new scores and move us up in the rankings. On Saturday night, after we get back from Oklahoma, some of the alumni and senior parents are arranging a dinner for all of the girls and the parents. This will be a great way for all of us to unwind and get ready for the meet on Sunday.
Come out and join us Sunday to watch our final home meet of the season at Huff Hall at 1:00 pm., and say goodbye to our four seniors. These four girls are an amazing group that have helped put Illinois gymnastics on the map. We are all going to miss them very much!
