Illini Ink: Women's Gymnastics Online Journal Week 20
Feb. 21, 2008
Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this week's edition, junior Kim Kruk talks about last week's meet against Michigan State and the scheduling change for this upcoming weekend.
Hey Illini Fans!!
So, as usual, the season is flying by. I can't believe that we are already half way through the season. This past weekend we had a home meet at Huff Hall against Michigan State University.
We started off on vault and it went well. It wasn't our highest score of the season, but we had some great vaults. Then, we went to bars where Krystal and Marijka started us off with really solid routines. Sarah, who has been out the past few meets with an ankle sprain, was back in the bar line up, and she returned without a problem. She ended up winning the bars title for the meet. She has been trying really hard to get her ankle back to full strength, and should be coming back on more events soon. She is a really solid and consistent all-arounder so that will be a nice boost for the last part of our season. Back to bars, Suki finished us off on bars. She was really excited to compete this new routine that she has been working on. You could tell she was a little nervous, but she did great. Beam was a little shaky. Half the beam team performed well, while the other half had some uncharacteristic mistakes on little things. We've been nit picking all week to make sure that this weekend we dominate the event!! Our last event was floor. We had some solid performances, and then as was the case with beam, had some minor uncharacteristic errors.
A lot of positive things came out of this meet. For the second week in a row, we did not have to count any major mistakes. I think we all realized that now we really need to focus on the little things. We've been busting our butts to make sure those little errors don't happen again and start the second half of season with a bang, and then head into championship season that way! LET'S GO ILLINI!!!
Also, because of recent events at Northern Illinois University, the meet scheduled for this coming weekend has been cancelled. In order to stay in our rhythm, we will be traveling to the University of Iowa to compete against the Hawkeye's and the Michigan State Spartans. It worked out great since the meet will take place on the same day as our originally scheduled meet. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victims at Northern Illinois University.
