Feb. 18, 2013
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Last week, Alina Weinstein earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors for tying Allison Buckley's Illinois all-around record of 39.550. So when the senior improved her score to a 39.600 this weekend against Iowa to become the sole leader in the program's history, the conference recognized her efforts once again as Weinstein was named Co-Gymnast of the Week along with Michigan's Joanna Sampson.
Weinstein not only made history Saturday but did so in front of a Gym Jam record crowd of 2,316 fans. The New Jersey native started the meet by scoring a 9.875 on the first three events, which included a season high on bars that helped the Illini achieve the fourth highest team bars score in school history with a 49.250.
With the team trailing going into the final rotation, Weinstein lifted the Illini to victory by a tenth of point by posting a new Illinois record on floor with a near perfect score of a 9.975. Thus, the senior triumphed over an Illini record that originated in 2000 by Phaedra Dixon.
In addition, Weinstein's performance earned her four individual titles on the day in vault, beam, floor and the all-around, bringing her season total to 10.
Furthermore, Weinstein now has three Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors in her career. In addition, she becomes the first Illinois gymnast to win in consecutive weeks and the first Big Ten gymnast to accomplish said feat this season. She is also the second multiple Gymnast of the Week winner this year, joining Joanna Sampson.
Up next, Weinstein and the rest of the #18 Fighting Illini travel to Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, Feb. 23, to take on #20 Ohio State at 3 p.m. CT.
