Feb. 14, 2008
Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this week's edition, sophomore Laura Woolf talks about the Chicago Style meet, spending time with family, and this weekend's meet against Michigan State.
Hey Illini Fans!
This past weekend we had a fun time competing in Chicago at the Navy Pier meet! This was the first year the "Chicago Style Meet", hosted by IGI, had a collegiate meet as well. No. 9 UCLA, No. 11 Stanford, and Washington were the three other teams that we competed against. Everyone was really pumped for this meet because several of us are from the Chicagoland area. The meet gave us a chance to see a lot of old teammates and coaches who had come to cheer us on. Also, we had tons of alumni and other fans in the stands to watch us compete.
Our first event was vault. Melissa started us off with a very nice yurchenko full. From there on the energy just kept flowing. We had some little mistakes on our landings, but over all did fairly well. We then headed to bars and brought that energy with us. Krystal started us off with a hit set and the rest of the girls followed her lead. Marijka had an outstanding bar routine posting our highest bar score of the night with a 9.775. Our third event was the balance beam. The team has been working really hard in practice to fix our mistakes on this event and it paid off. We counted no big mistakes on beam for the first time this season, hence, posted our season high of 48.825! Allison hit a phenomenal beam routine in which she tied for second!! After finishing beam, with smiles on our faces, we headed to floor. We knew we had nothing to lose and went out there and had fun! Everyone had great floor routines!
After the meet some of the girls, including myself, were able to spend the night with our families. Since I live less than an hour away from the city, I was able to enjoy a delicious family dinner before relaxing on my train ride back to Champaign. Although it was a very short stay, it is always refreshing to go home and catch up with the family.
But, Sunday came fast and we were back in the gym working on our little mistakes, particularly our landings on beam and bars. We are all excited and ready to dominate Michigan State this weekend at home! This meet is going to be aired on the Big Ten Network as well, so come out and support us! We love seeing all the orange in the crowd!
