Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this year's 20th edition, freshman Jaclyn Kantecki recaps the Penn State meet and previews the upcoming meet competitions.
Hey Illini Fans!
It sure is an exciting time of year to be an Illini gymnast. Season is now in full swing as we already have five meets under our belts. I can't believe we're already headed into our sixth weekend of competition! Each weekend we've made significant improvements, and our performances have certainly reflected all of the hard work we have been putting in during practices. This past weekend against Penn State was our best meet yet.
We set off for Happy Valley early Friday morning and arrived just in time before all of the snow hit. Unfortunately, some of the families that were planning to come and cheer us on weren't able to make it because they were snowed in. But, we did still manage to have quite an enthusiastic group of orange and blue in the crowd on Saturday. We got off to a great start on bars, and we carried the high energy and solid routines with us the entire meet to lead us to our season high score of 196.275. Afterwards we went to dinner at Champs where we got to watch our Illinois basketball team gain a victory at home against Michigan State. It was such an exciting day!
We have another busy weekend ahead of us seeing that we will be competing in two meets. Friday we will be traveling to the Windy City for the IGI Chicago Style Invite at Navy Pier where we'll face Denver, Nebraska and Iowa. We have not yet seen Denver this year, but it will be our second encounter with both Nebraska and Iowa. We'll have a day off Saturday to rest our bodies before our annual Pink meet on Sunday against Michigan State. Be sure to sport your pink to support the cause!
In the mean time, we will be making the most of each moment we have in the gym to work on details and find ways we can perfect our routines. Well, I think that's about all for now. Until next time, thanks so much for reading and Go ILLINI!!!
