CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Last friday night, the No. 14 Fighting Illini women's gymnastics team tied its sixth highest score in school history (196.475) and received great performances from Erin Buchanan on vault and floor. As a result, the conference office named Buchanan the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. The Haymarket, Va. native now ties Amber See and Giana O'Connor in winning the weekly honor twice in a season.
On Friday, the Illini emerged triumphant over Iowa in its annual Pink Meet. Buchanan sprinted out the gate and got the Orange and Blue off on the right note, recording a career high 9.825 and winning her first collegiate vault title. Buchanan's vault average of 9.788 ranks 19th in the Big Ten.
Buchanan then ended her day on floor where she tallied a 9.875 and finished in second place behind teammate Amber See. Thus, Buchanan has yet to score below a 9.85 on floor this season. Due to her success on the event, Buchanan moved up to No. 20 in the nation and No. 4 in the conference.
Illini fans can come watch the Big Ten Freshman of the Week and the rest of the Illini Feb. 7, when they host No. 6 Michigan at 7 p.m. inside Huff Hall.
