Get behind the scenes of Illinois Gymnastics with Illini Ink - the weekly women's gymnastics journal. In this week's edition, junior Lindsey Smith talks about the home opener last weekend, the Iowa meet and the Pink Meet.
Hello Illini Fans!!!
This past weekend we had our first home meet at Huff Hall against Ohio State. It felt great to be back in our home gym. We got to compete with the boy's team as well, which is always really fun! We had tons of fans show up wearing their orange and blue and it sure helped the excitement. We had a great week of practice going into the meet and it carried over into the competition. Since it was a home competition we started on vault. It went really well with everyone hitting their vaults but we still need to work on our landings. After vault we headed over to bars and had some really strong performances. We still have a few things to fine tune but it is still early in the season. Once we finished on bars we headed over to beam which went much better than last weekend. We were a little shaky but the improvements were very encouraging. Finally, we finished up on floor. Once again we had some really strong performances. The final team scores were really close. Although we did not have quite the success we were hoping for overall, we had to count two falls, there were a lot of positives to the night which will help us in the weekends to come.
We will be leaving for Iowa Thursday afternoon. It will be another great Big Ten competition, however, this meet will air on the Big Ten Network January 29th. We have all been working really hard in the gym this week and the energy has been great. The whole team is really excited to take on the Iowa Hawkeye's!
Also next weekend we will be hosting our first "Pink Meet" on February 2nd at 7:00 pm. Wear any pink shirt to show your support for this great cause (you will receive free admission if you wear your pink). We will be having different educational events throughout the meet. We hope to see you all then.
