PARK RIDGE, Ill. - University of Illinois junior Sarah Schmidt was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week by the conference office Monday afternoon. The Heartland, Wis., native won two individual titles and led the 19th-ranked Illini to an upset of #11 Penn State Saturday night at Huff Hall.
Schmidt claimed top honors in two of the three events she competed in, including uneven bars and floor, tying career-highs in both events with scores of 9.900. The two scores were the highest marks by any athlete in the conference in each respective event last week. Schmidt also set a career-high with a 9.825 on vault against the Nittany Lions.
This is Schmidt's first career weekly honor and the first for an Illini since Allison Buckley on March 19, 2008
Schmidt and the 14th-ranked Illini will remain in Champaign next weekend to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at Huff Hall. The meet will be a double-dual meet, with the No. 4 Illini men's squad taking on Ohio State at the same time.
